化する (-ka suru) as a productive process suffix
A cluster of words in this list use 化する to turn a static description into "the process of becoming that state": 肥大化する (to become bloated/hypertrophied), 沈静化する (to calm down), 固定化する (to become fixed), 硬直化する (to become rigid), 先鋭化する (to become radicalized). This is the same 化 suffix seen throughout N2/N1 vocabulary (現代化, 効率化), applied here specifically to change-of-state verbs. Separately, 煮詰まる and 煮詰める are worth knowing literally and figuratively: literally, to reduce/thicken by boiling; figuratively, for a discussion or plan to reach its final, concentrated stage (話が煮詰まる, for talks to reach a critical/deadlocked point) — the figurative sense is actually more common in business Japanese than the literal cooking sense.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between 露呈 and 露見?
Both mean a hidden problem coming to light, but 露呈 is more neutral — a weakness or flaw becomes apparent (問題点が露呈する). 露見 specifically implies a secret or wrongdoing is exposed against someone's wishes (不正が露見する, for fraud to come to light) — it carries a stronger connotation of exposure and consequence.
How is 派生 used differently from just "causing" something?
派生 means to branch off or derive from an existing source, keeping a visible connection to the origin — a new problem 派生する from an old one, or a word's meaning 派生する from its original sense. It describes an offshoot relationship, not simple causation (which would use 引き起こす or 招く instead).
