The 通信 and 放送 compound families
Six words here are built by attaching 通信 (communication) to a different noun: 通信社 (news agency), 通信速度 (connection speed), 通信手段 (means of communication), 通信網 (communications network), 通信衛星 (communications satellite), and 通信教育 (correspondence education) — recognizing this prefix lets you guess the general meaning of an unfamiliar 通信 compound on the exam even if you have not seen it before. A parallel family builds on 放送 (broadcast): 放送局 (station), 放送番組 (program), and 放送時間 (air time). Also worth noting: 媒体 and メディア are near-synonyms for 'medium/media,' but 媒体 is the more formal, native-Japanese term used in written and business contexts, while メディア is the everyday loanword; similarly ソフト and ハード are simply casual clippings of ソフトウェア and ハードウェア, common in spoken Japanese but rare in formal writing.
Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between 発行, 掲載, 公表, and 告知 — don't they all mean 'to publish' or 'to announce'?
They differ in what gets published and how formal it is. 発行 is used for issuing the publication itself (a magazine or official document is 発行される); 掲載 means a specific piece is printed or posted inside an existing publication or website (an article 新聞に掲載される); 公表 is a formal public announcement of information, often by an organization (企業が結果を公表する); and 告知 is a shorter, more everyday notice, like a store announcing a closing date. On N2 reading passages, 掲載 usually pairs with a location marker (〜に掲載される), while 公表 pairs with abstract information like results or findings.
Why does this list have so many katakana loanwords like プラットフォーム, アルゴリズム, and プロトコル — do I actually need these for N2?
Yes — N2 increasingly tests katakana tech terms because they appear unchanged in Japanese news articles, product reviews, and IT documentation. Many, like アルゴリズム (algorithm) or プロトコル (protocol), are close enough to their English source to recognize once you know standard katakana conversion patterns, but a few can mislead: スペック means 'specification,' not 'species,' and ソフト/ハード are clipped forms of ソフトウェア/ハードウェア rather than separate words.
