JLPT N2 Science & Environment Vocabulary (2026)

Complete JLPT N2 Science & Environment vocabulary with readings and example sentences (96 words).

Posted by

This set covers 96 N2-level words spanning earth science, biology, chemistry and physics, meteorology, and environmental policy, the vocabulary that fills newspaper science sections and reports on climate, pollution, and ecosystems. N2 reading passages draw on this exact register (温暖化, 生態系, 有機物, 観測データ) to discuss environmental and scientific topics, so recognizing these compounds on sight rather than sounding them out is essential for the reading section's time pressure.

This article is part of our JLPT N2 Complete Vocabulary Guide. Practice all 96 words with the Science & Environment Vocabulary deck in Onigiri Anki.

Recurring Roots: 有/無 and 害

Several words here form tight antonym sets built on the same root: 有機 (organic) and 無機 (inorganic) become 有機物 and 無機物 once the nominalizing suffix 物 (matter, substance) is attached, so it is more efficient to learn all four as one family than as separate items. A second root worth tracking is 害 (harm): it works as a suffix in 有害 (harmful) and 公害 (pollution, literally 'public harm'), and as a prefix in 害虫 (harmful insect) and 害獣 (harmful animal) — once 害 is recognized as 'harm/pest', all four become guessable instead of memorized. A third pair, 観測 and 測定, share the kanji 測 (to measure), which is a reliable signal for 'this word involves taking a scientific reading' anywhere it appears.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the difference between 天候, 気象, 日照, and 日射?

天候 refers to short-term weather conditions, as in 天候不良 (bad weather), while 気象 is the broader field of meteorology and atmospheric phenomena, seen in compounds like 気象観測 (weather observation). 日照 and 日射 both relate to sunlight, but 日照 emphasizes the duration of sunshine (hours of daylight) while 日射 refers to the solar radiation itself hitting a surface.

What's the difference between 水源, 流域, and 水域?

水源 is the source of water, such as a spring or reservoir that feeds a river, while 流域 is the drainage basin, meaning all the land whose water eventually flows into a given river system. 水域 is a more general term for a body or stretch of water, such as a lake, bay, or section of ocean, with 河川 (rivers) as the umbrella term these three are typically used alongside.
