The する-Verb Pattern
Once you know a noun like 予約 (reservation), you can make it a verb just by adding する: 予約する (to make a reservation). This pattern applies to hundreds of Japanese nouns, especially those borrowed from Chinese compounds (漢語). Recognizing this pattern means you effectively learn two words for the price of one studying N4 vocabulary.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between 思う and 考える?
思う (omou) expresses a spontaneous opinion, feeling, or belief — quick and personal. 考える (kangaeru) describes a more deliberate thinking process — considering, analyzing. 高いと思います (I think it's expensive, an opinion) vs 方法を考えています (I am considering a method, active thought).
Why do so many N4 verbs end in する?
Japanese has many two-kanji compound nouns borrowed from Chinese (漢語), and する is the most flexible way to turn any noun into an action. This is why the N4 vocabulary list includes so many noun+する pairs like 予約する, 招待する, and 失敗する.
