Study Tips for N5 Nouns
- Learn nouns with counters. Some N5 nouns pair with specific counters: 本 uses 一冊 (issatsu), 映画 uses 一本 (ippon). The counter often appears in N5 questions.
- Know both forms of Japanese. テレビ, パソコン, カメラ are katakana loanwords — recognize both the katakana and the English source word.
- Study similar words together. 映画 (movie) and 映画館 (movie theater), 本 (book) and 本屋 (bookstore) — N5 tests both the word and related compound.
- Connect nouns to verbs. 宿題 (homework) + する = 宿題をする (do homework). 電話 (phone) + かける = 電話をかける (make a call).
Frequently Asked Questions
Are there many katakana words on the N5?
Yes — approximately 15–20% of N5 vocabulary is katakana loanwords: テレビ, パソコン, カメラ, コート, シャツ, etc. Katakana reading is tested directly on the N5 exam.
Do I need to write kanji for N5?
The N5 writing section tests kanji recognition (reading), not production. You need to read kanji like 電気, 辞書, 手紙, but you are not asked to write them from memory.
